Do you recall the instructions you get when you first board a plane? At the first sign of trouble, the direction is to wear your oxygen mask first before you can help someone else with theirs. Imagine trying to help someone else with their oxygen when you cannot breathe yourself.
Chances are, both of you may perish, God forbid.
Nurses are caregivers, and for most of us, taking care of patients is very central to who we are, and we give it our all. We must be in good health first to effectively take care of others. For us to function at our best, self-care is a must.
All aspects of our lives should be in alignment, by that I mean the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual. When one or more of them are off, your whole being can be affected. I hope the conversations in my blogs can offer some self-care ideas that can be beneficial to you.
When was your last checkup? Annual check-ups should be an essential part of your health. When done consistently, they can prove to be vital in detecting subtle or not so subtle changes in your health that your primary care physician must discuss with you.
The earlier something is found and addressed most of the time, the better the outcomes. Do you know what your cholesterol levels are, what about your blood sugars and your weight? Is your body mass index (BMI) appropriate?
What is your blood pressure reading? Is there a reason to be concerned with those readings?
All these are questions that your PCP can answer for you. An annual checkup will most likely include weight and height checks, a complete blood count, a chemistry panel, TSH levels for your thyroid. Specific to men, sometimes there is a prostate exam or blood test. If you have a chronic condition that is being managed by your physician, you may have more tests done. In no way is this conclusive, please have these discussions this with your physician.
Your PCP will also decide what other tests to include after performing a comprehensive exam and interviewing you. Please be kind to yourself self-care for nurses is a must.
Taking care of yourself is a priority. You can only take care of others when you are at your best!
Ladies, when was your last mammogram? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has guidelines for breast cancer screening for women. https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/breast/pdf/BreastCancerScreeningGuidelines.pdf
When you start screening should be a conversation you must have with your physician. These are some of the questions you can ask your primary care physician during your annual checkup. If you have had an abnormal screen, or if you have a family history of breast cancer, the frequency of your screening may change. Again, please have a conversation with your physician.
If the recommendation for you is annual, please try and get it done annually. A year can make a difference. Some women have had a negative result for one year, and the next year the result was positive.
As you may already know, the earlier cancer is detected, the more treatment options are available, and the better the outcomes.
This is part of our self-care as a nurses. October is breast awareness month, and some organizations like Solis offer free mammograms. Please check them out. https://www.solismammo.com/.
Many other organizations provide mammograms; examples are county hospitals, women clinics, and other private practices.
Did you know October is Breast Cancer Awareness month? Some clinics offer mammograms for free or at discounted costs.
Ladies, nurses, this visit to your gynecologist is sometimes not very pleasant, but it is an essential part of self-care and should be annual or as needed. Your Primary care physician (PCP) may expect you to have this done before you go for your yearly checkup. I know this because it's usually the first question my PCP asks when I go for mine. The exam is not long. If you are sexually active, this is very necessary.
Dental health is essential, while you are making appointments for those other checkups, do not overlook dental exams. Did you know that poor dental hygiene can cause infections that can be detrimental to your heart? It’s not only your heart that can be affected. We all want to keep the beautiful smile and color to our teeth. As nurses, we work so closely with patients, and poor dental hygiene can lead to bad breath. And finally, we all want to keep our natural teeth if for a long time if possible. Just go and visit the dentist, it's part of your self-care.
Just like the pap smear, I think a lot of men do not like to have this test done. Although these tests are basic, they can sometimes tell a lot about your prostate health and other bigger problems that may be lurking. A digital rectal exam and a blood test known as Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) are the two common screening tests done. CDC recommends discussions with your physician on when and how often to have these tests done.

This is a thorn in my flesh! I am not talking about exercising to lose weight. “Sitting is the new smoking” this statement has been floating around lately, and I think it is true. A brisk walk, dancing, running, for about 30 minutes is beneficial for good health. Taking stairs instead of the elevator can check this box. Easier said than done, can you leave that parking spot close to the store for the next person and park further so you can walk some distance?

Do you want to feel recharged, renewed, and ready to take on the world? Take a vacation. Vacations can be short, a weekend can be all you need to feel great. Nursing is rewarding, but it can also be stressful. Spending hours and days taking care of the sick, watching the anguish some of their families go through, and trying to juggle the ever so changing world of healthcare can bring on unimaginable stress. Nurses are known to work hard, we need to make self-care an integral part of our lives.
Create time for the special girls/women in your life. There is something special when girlfriends meet and share the happenings in their lives. Sometimes it's not even to get an answer, sometimes it's just to have a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or some joys to spread. Make it happen!
Guys need their night out too. They also need time with good friends to talk, share and let it out. It is not just a girl thing.
Nurses are some of the busiest people around. Please take time and spend some time with your better half/other half/loved one. Plan date nights, ditch the scrubs and paint the town pretty
When was the last time you watched a movie? Forget the ones that you sit and watch at home. I am talking about going to a movie theater, getting overflowing popcorn, some soda, and sitting through half an hour of previews. And oh the fantastic sound effects, that kind of movie. Take your family, friends, or for heaven's sake, go alone!
I do not have first-hand information about this, but I have talked to countless people who do. I have never had a massage. A massage is a must for all nurses. It is not a luxury. I have nurse friends who have it scheduled every so often religiously, and they say it is a lifesaver.
The massage chair and the warm pillow around the neck are worth the amount of money you pay for a basic pedicure. Competition between nail salons has dramatically improved the ambiance and services they provide. Massage chairs, warm pillows, candles, music, and sometimes even wine make can it a nano vacation. They do make you feel good. You get great looking nails and me time. Please go!
